The L405 Range Rover and L494 Range Rover Sport share a differential design with a specific, well-documented weakness: a ball-bearing race that collapses long before the taper bearings around it show any wear at all. It produces a whine, then a rumble, then a very large dealer quote.

We see these constantly, and usually at mileages that surprise the owner. Seventy to ninety thousand miles is typical, and we’ve seen them a long way under that.
The failure pattern is distinctive. Strip a failed unit and the taper bearings look fine. The ball race is destroyed. Land Rover moved to a ball-bearing design in this generation, following a similar move by other manufacturers, and it is simply the weak point of the assembly.
What owners notice first is a whine at motorway speed. It’s easy to blame a wheel bearing, and it often is one, but a wheel bearing noise changes when you load the car in a corner, while a differential whine tends to change with throttle rather than steering. If it whines on the accelerator and goes quiet when you lift, look at the differential.
There’s a second cause worth knowing about. These are wading vehicles, and the differential breather can draw water in when a hot axle is plunged into cold water. Water in the oil destroys bearings quickly and quietly.
Land Rover differentials are ratio- and specification-specific, and the suffix matters. Part numbers on these units follow the pattern xPLA-2A413-xx, for example DPLA-2A413-XB or HPLA-2A413-BA. Two units that look identical can have different final drive ratios or different electronic locking hardware, and fitting the wrong one causes driveline binding and a fault message.
Always match to the VIN. Send us the number off your unit and we’ll confirm it before anything is ordered.

| Symptom | Cause | Our fix |
|---|---|---|
| Whine at motorway speed that changes with throttle, not steering | Ball bearing race collapse, the known failure | Full rebuild with uprated bearing set, crown wheel and pinion inspected, backlash and contact pattern set |
| Rumble or grinding, worse under load | Advanced bearing failure with debris circulating | Rebuild; crown wheel and pinion usually need replacing at this stage |
| Clunk on drive take-up | Worn pinion or side gear splines, driveshaft play | Assessed on strip |
| Oil on the differential casing or the tunnel | Pinion seal or cover gasket | Seal and gasket renewed |
| Milky or emulsified oil | Water ingress through the breather after wading | Rebuild, breather extended and repositioned |
| “4x4 system fault” or driveline warning message | Electronic locking differential motor or actuator | Actuator diagnosed and renewed, module tested |
| Binding or wind-up on tight turns | Wrong ratio unit fitted, or electronic differential fault | Ratio verified against VIN, electronic differential tested |

Complete strip and clean. All bearings renewed. Crown wheel and pinion inspected and replaced if the tooth pattern is marked. Backlash set to specification and the contact pattern checked with engineer’s blue and photographed for your records. New seals throughout. Breather modified. Filled with the correct specification oil. Warranted for 12 months.
Land Rover treat this oil as fill-for-life. We’d suggest changing it at 60,000 miles, and immediately after any deep wading. It costs very little and it’s the difference between a service and a rebuild.
Rebuilt exchange differentials available subject to stock, with nationwide collection and delivery. Remove the unit and we’ll collect, or send us the car.
We price a differential rebuild once we know which unit you have and what it is doing. Send us the gearbox number and the symptoms and you will have an answer the same working day, with an indicative price wherever we can give one.
Differential noise changes with throttle. Wheel bearing noise changes when you load the car in a corner. If you’re not sure, we’ll road test it.
Briefly and gently. Once debris is circulating, the crown wheel and pinion go too, and the bill roughly doubles.
Where a suitable option exists for your unit, yes. That’s the whole point of a rebuild over a like-for-like replacement.
For a replacement unit, yes, and the suffix matters. For a rebuild of your own unit, no.

How it works
You don’t need to bring the car. Most of what we do arrives on a pallet.
We can arrange collection anywhere in mainland UK. Ask when you enquire.
No work happens without your say-so, and there are no surprises on the invoice.
Same working day
The gearbox number, the vehicle and the symptoms. That is usually enough for a straight answer, and photographs are welcome.
